Winterim

What is Winterim?

Winterim is a unique, innovative educational experience outside of the traditional curriculum. Students will acquire new knowledge, expand learning beyond the classroom, and explore interests. There are many exciting courses being taught by our awesome faculty. Students will choose their unique pursuit of interest from offerings by the Lutheran High staff and even some Sheboygan community members.

History in the movies
History in the movies is a class in which the student will watch a selected Hollywood feature film each day that tells the story of non-fiction historical events. Prior to viewing each film, students will learn the events involving the plot and historical period of each film. Throughout the week, students will learn some of the techniques involved in film making. We will examine how meaning in film is conditioned by the use of camera, editing, lighting, sound, acting, and technology. We will also evaluate the accuracies, inaccuracies and bias of the film. Films to be considered for viewing include: Glory, Amadeus, Apollo 13, United 93, Hotel Rwanda, and Rudy.
exploring teaching
Have you ever thought you might enjoy being a teacher? This is your opportunity to try it out. This class will give you a chance to look at what great teachers do. This Winterim experience will include learning about different teaching strategies and student learning styles. Each day will also include traveling to an elementary school and being a teacher assistant. You may even have a chance to help teach the class!
Outdoor education & Adventure
This course introduces students to the basic skills required for camping, backpacking, and general outdoor adventure. Students will gain an appreciation for the natural world created by God for our pleasure and enjoyment by learning the basics for acquiring potable water, building and maintaining primitive shelters, creating fire using various methods, knot tying, and much more! This hands-on course will lay the foundation for a lifetime of wilderness adventure. We will also spend a half day rock climbing at Adventure Rock in Milwaukee.
god's wisdom and design: it's his lab
As God’s handiwork, humankind has uncovered and cultivated numerous gifts, abilities, and applications in the science realm. Chemistry, as the study of matter and the physical world of God’s creation, uses this knowledge to produce new materials and integrate products for everyday life. Biology, or the study of life, is also involved with much chemistry. Advances in the life sciences have obvious implications to our overall health and well-being. Through use of discussion, video, guest speakers, industry field trips, research and the laboratory experience, students will explore scientific achievement while at the same time realize its limitations. Comparisons will be made to what has been discovered in God’s physical designs and then applied in some of today’s commodities. The student will also perform several experiments that utilize, study, and observe this process. Safe and accurate lab skills will be further developed.
