Open to juniors & seniors.  Prepare & present via electronic means (DVD or YouTube download) an oral presentation of a 4-5 minute selection from one of the approved works by Charles Dickens in celebration of his 200th birthday in 2012.

 
Each of 2 National Grand Prize winners and each of their teacher-coaches will receive (1) a $1,000 cash prize and (2) a week-long, all expenses paid trip to London, England, to perform their presentations before The Dickens Fellowship members in London.
 
Each of 2 semi-finalists will receive a (1) $500 cash prize and (2) an invitation to join the grand prize winners on the trip to London at a cost to be determined by the contest's designated travel agency and to present their oral interpretations along with the grand prize winners.
 
Students may select any teacher in any subject area at their high school to serve as the teacher-coach for this competition.

After reading The Anthem, select ONE of the following three topics:

  1. Why did Ayn Rand name her main characters "Prometheus" and "Gaea"? Compare the historical myths of Prometheus and Gaea to the lives of these two characters.

  2. What does Equality finally understand about his society when the Council threatens to destroy his invention?

  3. In the final chapter of Anthem, Prometheus writes that he now understands "why the best in me had been my sins and my transgressions; and why I had never felt guilt in my sins."  What has Prometheus come to understand about himself?  Why does his society regard the "best in him" as sinful?

  2. Howard Roark discusses the motives, methods and functioning of both the altruist and the egoist.  Do the lives of Peter Keating, Ellsworth Toohey and Catherine Halsey illustrate his thesis about altruists?  Does his own life illustrate his thesis about egoists? Explain your answer.
